France goalkeeper Gregory Coupet has revealed he may retire from football after Les Bleus' upcoming Euro 2008 game with Italy. The 35-year-old has already told his club Lyon he does not intend to stay with them next year, and has said he will only continue his career with a club outside France.

In May he announced he would consider his future after the European Championships, which run until the end of June.

However, after two poor results, France's European campaign is on the brink of coming to a premature end should they fail to beat Italy on Tuesday, leaving Coupet to admit the game with the Azzurri may be his last.

When asked if he might retire from the game altogether following the Austria and Switzerland tournament he replied: "Honestly I don't know. I only want to think about this after the European Championships.

"The only certainty for now is that I want to leave Lyon, as I announced on May 23, and that for my career to continue I'll have to move abroad.

"But I'll have to think about it (retirement). Therefore it's true that, if we go out, the game against Italy could be my last."

I think the point that Justin made on another post was good, if Goalkeepers make the decision to retire its something they have to be at peace with, probably Coupets not had the most enjoyable campaign so far, but little he could of done better.

I feel really sorry for Coupet though, he should have been the starting keeper for WC2006 and I know

he nearly quit the French team when it was announced that Barthez would be starting keeper.

So if he retires now he will only have featured in one major tournament.

Considering he played for the French Champions for 7 years straight, you think he deserved better.

Agree he should have been the French Number 1 at the last World Cup. Its mad when you think back that Ollie Kahn only ever played in one World Cup Finals Tournament when he seemed to be the German Number 1 for ever!!!

Yikes, that's true Sepp.

It deed seem like Kahn has been playing forever, he also had to bide his time

behind Kopke though.

Who was the German keeper for Euro 00, was it Kahn or Kopke ?

Kahn was the German Nr.1 for Euro 2000.

Well I'm not counting the 3rd/4th place game in 2006 he played in as I just see that as a bit of a token gesture.......
