Further reply to Norn Iron Keeper. I cannot remember any dealings with the 4 goalkeepers you mentioned, I had heard of and am aware of Tommy Wright, George Dunlop and the goal scoring Alan Fettis, but I am afraid that Wes Lamont is not known to me. Thank you for the information on Brian Hutchinson, very interesting. Dave.

Dave - just a question what were the Yellow Holdalls you refer to? Were they bigger than the glove bag?

George Dunlop was Northern Irelands third choice keeper at 1982 world cup.I remember reading that he was unemployed and playing semi-pro for Linfield,Pat Jennings and Jim Platt both gave George a pair of gloves whilst at the tournament.

Reply to rocketpants. We sold 2 different large bags, Sukan Yellow Nylon grip at £8.50 and Sukan Yellow Nylon Holdall at £10.50, compared to the Sukan PVC glove bag at £1.50. The 2 larger bags were in the catalogues for season 1983-84 and 1984-85. They were designed to match in colour wise with the glove bag but as stated in yellow nylon with black webbing, zip and handles. They also had Sukan Sports printed on them in the same style as on the glove bag. The grip was a standard rectangular shape approximate size length 18", depth 12" and width 4.5", while the holdall was a tubular shape with an approximate length of 22" and a circumference of 34". We did not expect to sell many but they were included as the glove bag had sold so well, and when used would act as an advertisement for the company. They achieved what they were set out to do and certainly proved to be strong as I still have one of each, and they are full of the companies books and items that I have sometimes referred to when answering the questions. I will be trying to get a photo sent to Jimmy with a request that he inserts it with this answer, although obviously it may take a little while before it appears. Dave.

Great stuff Jimmy and Dave - there's my blue Sondico Ray Clemence glove bag. I've said this before on TGB but I'm really kicking myself that I didn't keep it!

Update for rocketpants regarding Sukan glove bag. I have spoken today on the phone with bagsdirect and can confirm that this company evolved from the Conquest Products who made the bag for us. I was able to speak to Phil Wells who was working for Conquest at this time and as soon as I said Sukan Sports, his immediate reply was yellow bags, so not only goalkeepers remember it. When we were buying from them in the early 1980's they had a manufacturing unit in Reading and this is where the bags were made. At this time they had started sourcing some of their bags overseas because of manufacturing costs, and as the years passed by more and more of their production went overseas due to a combination of cost and their being unable to find suitable workers in Reading. In 1997 they closed down their manufacturing unit and since then all of the goods they sell have been made in China. In 2000 they moved out of their old premises, which is now flats after redevelopment, and now have an office only in Reading at 29 Whitley Street. He knows that they can certainly make some more bags if they are required, but the minimum quantity would be 500 bags. I hope to be able to go and see him in the next few days to try and confirm what can and can't be done, and at what price. I will report back as and when I have further news. Dave.

If my memory serves me correct around 91/92 you had a deal where young keepers at Football league clubs coul purchase Uhlsport at a reduced cost. I remeber myself ordering gloves for the YTS keeper (Matt Clarke)when I was at Rotherham United, he went on to play in the Premiership, I ended up in the  Dr Martens League!!

Matt Clarke had a spell on loan at Bolton and was absolute quality...in fact he was in goal against Preston when we won promotion in the play-offs at the Millenium Stadium. I was gutted when Bolton didnt sign him permanently as at the time I easily had him over Jussi. Shame he had to retire due to injury only a year or so later.....makes you wonder if Bolton had reservations over his knee because I remember him having problems with it at the time....
