Drill for Handling, Diving technique, speed of mind and body

Sorry its been a while guys, trying not to make excuses but i've been pretty snowed under. Right here goes-

Figure 1

                                                         GK

S2                                                     S1                                                 S3

Two cones are place in centre of the goals approx 3 yds apart, GK stands between the cones and recieves a volley from S1 for him to catch, as soon as the ball leaves the GK's hand to throw the ball back to S1, S2 sided foots a shot firmly about 1yd in side the post for the GK to save. This process is repeated but with the side foot shot to his/her left from S3 after a catch from S1.

 Repeat 6 each side.

Progressions

*Have S2 and S3 volley or throw ball mid bar height and/or high to practsie diving technique at different heights.

Key Factors

*Correct starting position

*Handling- Head still and behind ball if head height, on balls of feet with body weight foward

*Diving- 'Power step' towards the ball with foot at 45 degrees, and push off over the top of the foot at same height as ball. Land on shoulder and bring hands towards the ball as soon as possible. Try to keep head behind ball as 2nd barrier. Land on side and let the shoulder take impact of the fall, bring the ball down carefully last of all. This is the diving technique for shots, headers, volleys with pace, within 12yds when you havent got chance to move you feet much.

*Focus on dealing with the volley, before changing focus to the 2nd server. Requires concentration and focus.

I like!  I also think it is paramount to have progression in drills, especially for advanced GK's.  It keeps them interested, and more importantly, focused.  Well done Matt!

Has anybody got any advanced drills? I have every DVD, video that I know is available, nothing new seems to be out there. If anybody sees the new Brazilian series on GK techniques or warm ups dont bother buying it very basic

On your key points you mentioned on dives bring the shoulder down first and then bring the ball down last, but i usually hear bring the ball down first to break the fall, which is correct technique?

Don't use the ball to break the fall mate, it will very likely, at some point, "pop" out of your hands.

As Jimmy said, do not use the ball to break your fall use your shoulder, as if you land on the ball if will come out most of the time. Sorry been away for a while been moving home and still without internet conection in my new home! Grrrr

The above point deserves a little elaboration. I agree about landing on the shoulder, but only on low-mid height shots. I was always taught, in the UK as well as US, to bring the ball down first when you've made a diving save and held it on anything waist high and above. You don't so much land on the ball, as you pivot around it, the ball itself bearing very little of your weight. I've done this my entire life and have never had the ball pop out, and this is how most of the pros do it too - you can see Gregory Coupet do it several times in the latter bit of his training video - there's an especially good one during the credits, tho he does release the ball when he lands because he's got to go save another one.

Some people do, some people dont.

Its up to personal prefrence i think, some coaches say shoulder 1st and bring the ball down gentley afterwards.

I have always been told shoulder 1st, and i believe this as i think its the safer option.

Its called the 'Crystal Vase' technique by Simon Smith, in where you treat the ball like a vase, if you land on it or slam it down, it will break.
