I have been working out with some new fitness trainers for a few weeks now. A lot of our work has been on my goalkeeping fitness. A lot of explosive and power exercises, plyos, footwork and some sand pit work. I have really enjoyed the sand pit work because it is easy on the knee but really overloads the legs. I do a lot of lateral work in the sand. Everything the trainers have me do is gk specific. I see those guys twice a week and I spend another two days a week on my own with weights and cardio.
I also started back to gk training last week. Right now I will train 3 days a week with a few other gks. Just a lot of handling to get back in the swing of training. After the first few sessions the legs got abit heavy but it was a good feeling to have. It is such a great feeling to get back on the field and handle balls. It really makes me happy when I can be out there training. It has been a tough two years for me with injuries so to be able to get back to what I truly love to do is a blessing.
We will start preseason Feb. 1 so I will have a few weeks to prepare. The big thing for me right now is not to over do it too early. Preseason is 12 weeks long so there is plenty of time for me to be ready by April. So I have to make sure I pace myself.
Speaking of the MLS, things will start heating up again with the combine going on this weekend and the college draft next Friday. There should be some movement this week with players. That is just the norm at this time of the year.
Also, saw a great story about Nicky Weaver of Man City and all his knee issues. It is great to see him back on the field and playing so well. He is an inspiration for me. If he can recover from 4 surgeries then I can come back from 2.
To all my goalkeeping friends I wish you all a Happy New Year. I will be hoping for a healthy year for all of you.
Until next time.
