Chewie's Hot or Not list...

Chewie’s hot or not list….

I love this time of year.  Seeing tons and tons of new football/soccer products always puts a big fat smile on my face.  Here is a rundown of what I like, and what I do not like so much so far this year:

Hot…

New Uhlsport line.  I like the fact they are willing to do something a little different each year.  I love the new roll finger model, and the inclusion of a NC glove.

Not…

Lanzera line fro Eurosport.  The gloves are not that bad I suppose, but they are charging premium prices, for gloves that are generally unproven.  I do respect the fact they do not want to put out a “budget” line, but do they really think if it comes down to choosing a Sells, Sondico, or Reusch FP glove, that I will choose a Lanzera for the same price, or above?

Hot…

Removable Finger Protection.  I like the idea that if I have to use FP, I can use it on an as needed basis.  Adidas, Uhlsport, Reusch, Sondico, Sells etc…All have removable FP.  Some companies are apparently going the reverse direction (HO) which seems backwards to me.

Hot…

New nike and adidas lines.  I think both have made strides this year with their line.  By all accounts, the new nike spyne, and other gloves in the line are all improving.  Adidas has made lots of progress this year with latex backhands, and removable protection.

Not…

Nike and Adidas lack of respect for the little guy.  They refuse to work with clients who do not carry their entire product line, or have a brick an mortar store.  Soccer is a very grass roots sport, but nike and adidas choose to ignore the small mom and pop operations that want to sell their goalkeeper equipment online, but do not want to order a insane amount of crap tops with the Beckham logo smattered all over it…Shame on the both of you.

Hot…

Mid priced all leather soccer boots.  Tons of great options out there, some even with K leather that are under $75.  Kelme, Puma, Umbro, Nike, Adidas…All have a great mid priced boot that will offer fantastic value for the money.

Not…

Insanely expensive boots.  Nomis, Lotto, Hummel (amongst others), all have boots well over $250!  Will they help your game, probably not, have people been buying them?  Not really.  Learn a lesson folks, when you start the season selling a boot for $300, and then 9 months later it is on sale at soccer.com for $89, your experiment probably did not work…Let it go already!

Hot…

Clothing available in hefty sizes!  Ok, I need to lose weight, I know this…But damn it, if I want a XXXXL adidas shirt, and I now have the option J

Not…

Slim fit, ultra tight fitting shirts, pants, shorts, etc….Now I am not talking about the under armour type stuff, I am referring to the alarming trend of tight kits (kappa, althletica, diadora)…I have no desire to see this on any football player, especially in bright orange (I am looking at you Werder Bremen).  Also, when I order an XXL in a Kappa shirt, it basically fits like a painted on lycra half shirt.

Hot…

Sells…In shops in Spain, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, etc….Great line, great management, and fantastic product development.

Not…

HO.  It seems the new line did not do so well, and you see lots of  folks trying to get rid of HO.  Also seems like they have lost markets instead of expanding in them.

Well thats it, please feel free to curse at me!

Cheers,

 Chewie

Completely agree about the mid level boots!  As a person who wears black, kangaroo leather boots pretty much exclusively, this is a great trend I myself have noticed.  It seems like more companies are trying to get some similar boots in the $80-100 to compete with Copa’s.

Certainly seems the case with HO. Very sad this as from my experiance it has nothing to do with the product. I'm certain others on this forum who have experiance using AND selling/distributing HO will vouch it's a problem with the company rather than the actual product.

I totally agree with your comment about Adidas and Nike's lack of support for small shops. I'm tired of getting excited to go to a new store somewhere, only to be disappointed with the same stuff; ugly Beckham apparel and such

Great Post Chewie ... good way to start the day here.

My thoughts on HO are very well known and it is a real shame because the gloves were first class.

One more HOT for me ....

The Glove Bag! Well done to all members, we have had a fantastic first few months.

HOT .. i think the new 2007 puma range looks superb . they have listened to end users and tried to address the problem of poor spines , and they have brought out the simple flat palm model worn by many pro's , the v-kat pro (and at only £35-ish with their top line latex )

i would love to see sondico do well in the uk again . unfortunately for me they seem to think that sizes below 9 don't exist ... great products though .

i totally agree with chewie that it is great to sells doing so well , they really deserve their success .

i also agree about the tight fitting shirts . nothing worse than seeing a crowd shot of several thousand overweight fans in what appears to be brightly coloured lycra (spandex) ...... not nice at all

Call me crazy (forgive me Chris and Blacky), but the puma line is a tad boring this year.  I would still not hesitate to buy any of the line as they are first quality gloves, but they are not too progressive or exciting this year.

The Puma Range is 1st class. New V Konstruct is great, Puma will be the one of the best Goalkeeping brands in no time and they now have Shay!

Removable Finger Protection is great keepers want to customise the protection, Shame that Sells only good finger protection glove is only available at PDS Wrap Guard!

I'm sure that as the season goes on there will be some more great product available.

And let me be clear....I am only talking about the LOOK of the gloves, not the gloves themselves.  They have been so different each year, that I guess I was just expecting more pop this season.

I am with you in most Hots and Nots. Great post. Simple. Clear. Right on the nose ...I wish that you were wrong about HO. But you´re right. Too bad. They are huge over here but it doesn´t pay up to be restricted to Portugal and Spain and the south of France in the long run ... I was expecting more from Reusch this year. They heve an excellent SSG and G1 latex foams, so why not use then in NC cuts - Bundesliga - or Roll-finger cut - Serie A III or Serie A Ortho-tec. And why not an NC cut ortho-tec with Aquatec latex. The backhand design puts me off some glonve models. There is one - I guess X1 foam model inwhich the finger look like they have RED nail polish ...WOW that is why no one had ever done that before... DAAAHHH ... I too has expecting more from PUMA and SONDICO design wise. But as a Reusch fan I have no problem to state that these two brands offer the best value for money product in the market, today. Apart from these Uhlsport are doing fine. Apart from the boots. Bring back the classic UHL keeper boots, please.
