Choices

Too Many Choices…..When I was goalkeeper in my earlier years we were not spoiled for choice when it came to anything soccer….We had limited choices in shoes, shirts, and most of all gloves.  I find myself agonizing over glove choices now.  There are SO many to choose from, that it almost becomes annoying trying to find JUST the right glove.  In the mid 80’s to early 90’s, we really had two choices.  Reusch, and Uhlsport…Sure others existed, but they were few and far between.  Reusch and Uhlsport absolutely dominated the market.  In the few soccer shops that did exist in the US, they all carried 2 or 3 from each brand, and that basically was your only option.     Do not get me wrong, we were happy to have those choices, and I still count some of the gloves from that era (Reusch Pfaff, Uhlsport 034) as some of the best ever.

My Point is this…Sometimes we focus sooooo much on the gloves that we think will make us better goalkeepers, that we forget about the little things that make us better.  Kids especially (unless they are properly trained) assume that having a pair of Adidas Fingersaves will make them better goalkeepers.  I witnessed a scene in a soccer shop here in Columbus that seems very typical of young keepers today…”Mom, I need a pair of Fingersaves for indoor”…”Well, $100 seems very expensive, what about these here that are $45?”…”MOM, those are NOT Fingersaves”…..”Well why do you need fingersave gloves?”….”Because that’s what my friends told me I needed”….Of course the shop owner was more than happy to sell them the fingersaves because he also did not know better…Incidentally, the glove the Mom suggested was the Adidas Fingertip, a far better glove than any fingersave in my opinion.  We tend to assume that in the myriad of gloves available, that one will grip just a little better than the other, or help us make that fingertip save, or maybe, just maybe, help us save that penalty to win the game.

Of course it is all rubbish….At last check I have counted over 100 brands of  gloves on the market.  Granted, some of them are junk, but for the most part, most of them are almost identical in material and construction.  Good gloves have a soft latex palm, fit properly, and offer shock absorption, and that rarely, if ever, changes.  Why are we so focused on trying all of these gloves, when really they are all about the same? Being one of the biggest offenders, I will say this.  Coming from an era where we did not have lots of choices, and there were ONLY two brands, I can say that I get a rush when I find a new pair of gloves that I have been dying to try…It almost gives you an inebriated feeling when finding that PERFECT pair of gloves.  In the last year I have used the following brands:  Sells, Sondico, Puma, Reebok, HO, Jako, Derby Star, The One Glove, Umbro, Nike, Adidas, JA, and countless others….Two brands conspicuous in their absence, Reusch, and Uhlsport….There are far too many choices in gloves today.  THANK GOD.

When i was a kid all you could find in the uk was reusch, uhlsport, sondico (My personal fav's), umbro and maybe adidas. Now their are so many. Alot are the same gloves, just with a different logo and colours.

Also totally valid point about the kids with the fingersaves, i see that so often coaching its untrue. They think they will make them a better keeper, and also parents tend to like them to stop the kids fingers getting hurt.

But what i say is, if they learn the correct technique, their fingers wont get hurt anyway.

Its interesting, as more and more gimmicks and "advanced" foams, fits and such are released, it just reinforces what really works best for me- a simple rolled finger supersoft foam glove. Having said that, I think it's funny how the prices have panned out over the years- comparing the Reusch International from '94 to the Sells SS Contour Wrap, you have more quality for 50$ less than the Reusch International'd cost. But then again, 10 years ago you'd have the Sondico Friedel Classic and the Adidas Eqt. DS with the same palm and relatively same backhand, one cost 70$, the other $45 but which was more popular?

I was speaking with Chewie about this just the other day. In little old New Zealand in the "olden days", no (or very very few) gloves were available at all. Thank goodness for Sukan Sports and Shoot Magazine! All my glove purchases were made by a letter and a bank cheque sent to the UK, sometimes based only on a drawing in a magazine!

Ah good old Sukan Sports.

I can remember like yesterday my mum writing out a cheque for my Christmas present to Sukan Sports for some padded goalkeeper tracksuit bottoms as I was due to play on this 'new' astro-turf invention - which left burns on your legs if rumours were true. She even insisted on phoning Sukan first to tell them a cheque was on its way - remember we are talking of a much more naiive time here when sending 'money' in the post was all I can describe as totally unheard of!

Where I lived we where quite lucky really for shops stocking goalie gloves - the best being George Bells' sports shop. The only problem was that as I was still a school kid the only gloves in my size available in our local shops were the cheaper end of the range. This again was were Sukan came in handy - they stocked a much better choice of sizes. The difficulty was trying to persuade good old mum and dad to fork out nearer to £10 for a pair of gloves, after all it was only the soft goalies who wore gloves according to my dad!

And Chewie I'm totally with you about some of the gloves from that era being among the best ever - all we need know is a Goalie glove gHall of Fame'

1 x Goalie Glove Hall of Fame in production :) Great idea!

If we do a Hall of Fame, there must be a Hall of Shame to remind the manufacturers to quit giving their R&D people hallucinogens that results in the gimmicky crap passed off as "innovative."

It is true that alot of gloves are almost identical now a days, but i still buy alot of gloves from different brands. Like Chewie it is the search for the perfect glove, but it is also the joy of trying a new cut, catching the first ball with the new (and probably overhyped) latex and so on.

Another thing about it is the joy of putting used gloves into a big box and store them, and then sometimes take them out and when you put them on again its like when you wore them for the first time.
