With
the new Barclays Premiership season drawing nearer, premierleague.com
looked at five of the best saves from the last season.
TOMASZ KUSZCZAK (West Bromwich Albion v Wigan Athletic)
Wigan Athletic were beaten by 10-man West Bromwich Albion at the JJB
Stadium after Kuszczak made a brilliant reaction save to deny Jason
Roberts in injury-time. The Latics had laid siege to the Baggies' goal
but Kuszczak, who had been in a good run of form, was not to be beaten
and stopped Roberts from close range.
MAIK TAYLOR (Birmingham City v Arsenal)
Taylor had a fine game against Arsenal at Highbury, making a number of
fine saves to take 10-man Birmingham City within nine minutes of
gaining a point. The pick of his saves came early in the second half
when he tipped away a Freddie Ljungberg shot. He also pushed a Robert
Pires volley onto the post and saved a penalty. He was finally beaten
late on by a deflected shot.
SHAY GIVEN (Newcastle United v Arsenal)
Arsenal were also frustrated at St James’ Park, with Given holding firm
and Nolberto Solano snatching a late winner. Among Given’s saves was a
superb effort to keep out a instant volley from Henry as he met a Cesc
Fabregas cross.
KELVIN DAVIS (Sunderland v Manchester United)
Sunderland’s goalless draw at Old Trafford could not prevent their
relegation, but it all but ended United’s title hopes. Davis was the
man chiefly responsible for the result with good saves from Cristiano
Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooy. The Van Nistelrooy save was the best,
Davis getting down to his left to keep out the Holland forward’s
snapshot.
EDWIN VAN DER SAR (Manchester United v Everton)
The Dutchman had a solid first season at Manchester United and made an
early impression with a good save from Everton’s Tim Cahill in his
first Barclays Premiership match for them. Van der Sar did well to tip
over as the Australian fired in a typically powerful header.
So do you agree with these five or totally disagree?
